Sow Ishikura spring onion seeds thinly at a depth of 6mm (1/2in) with plants spaced 5cm (6in) apart. Choose a sunny position with well-dug, fertile soil, and water the bed before sowing. Gently firm the soil after sowing to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Keep the soil moist, especially during dry spells, and remove any weeds to minimise competition for nutrients. Thinning the seedlings is unnecessary, as this variety grows upright without crowding.
For a continuous supply of fresh spring onions, sow seeds every three weeks throughout the growing season. Harvest Ishikura spring onions when they reach your preferred size, picking them as needed.
