Bean Seeds

Bean seeds are among our most popular vegetable seeds because they’re easy to grow and taste great, and make a great first project for vegetable gardeners. They can even be used as soil-improving green manure: dig the beans into the soil after fruiting, and they will release nitrogen and organic matter into the soil as they rot.

Bean plants are part of the legume family, and we have a huge range for sale at Mr Fothergill’s: broad bean seeds, snake bean seeds, climbing beans, and more. Whether you just want delicious beans from your own garden or you’re planning to use them as companion plants, you can shop our full range below.

Why Grow Bean Seeds?

Beans are wonderfully easy to grow, and they naturally do well in warm climates. As a beginner, you could hardly have a simpler start! Even better, legumes are among the richest sources of plant protein, dietary fibre and many more amazing nutrients, so they’re good for you as well as tasting delicious. Growing beans is great if you’re gardening with children, too, helping them discover the pleasure of getting their hands dirty in the garden.

When to Sow Bean Seeds

Beans are spring vegetable seeds that are best sown in warmer months, when the soil has warmed up after the last frost. You can also plant them in summer for a later harvest.

If you can’t wait, beans can be started indoors roughly 2-3 weeks before the last expected frost and transplanted once the ground warms up. This gives your beans the best possible start, and you an even earlier crop!

How to Grow Bean Seeds

To grow beans from seed, plant them 2-3cm (1in) deep in a sunny, well-drained spot after the last frost. Space the seeds every 5-10cm (2-4in) in rows 30-40cm (12-16in) apart to give them plenty of room to grow. Beans prefer slightly acidic or neutral soil, so test and add acidic manure/compost from your compost heap if necessary. Water them well after planting and keep them moist (but not waterlogged) throughout the growing season.

Beans take a week or two to germinate depending on the temperature, and are relatively low-maintenance. Grow climbing beans on a support like a trellis or stake to help them grow upwards. Harvest regularly to encourage the plants to grow even more beans until the end of the season!
