When to Sow Salad Leaf Seeds

Salad leaf seeds do best in mild conditions, so sow them in spring or autumn when temperatures aren’t too extreme. Most varieties prefer cooler weather and may struggle in the heat of summer or the frost of winter. That said, some types, like winter lettuces and certain spinach seed varieties, can be sown year-round with the right care. For a continuous harvest, try sowing small batches every couple of weeks to keep fresh leaves coming. For more specific instructions, consult the packet your seeds come in.

How to Grow Salad Seeds

Sow salad leaf seeds directly into well-prepared soil or containers, scattering them thinly in rows. Cover the seeds lightly with soil, water gently, and keep the area moist during germination. A sunny spot is best for quick growth, but partial shade will do if that’s all you have.

Use good-quality vegetable compost for container growing and sow your salad seeds in shallow trays or pots. Once seedlings appear, thin them out to about 10cm (4in) apart so that each plant has room to grow. Regular watering and harvesting the outer leaves as needed will encourage new growth, giving you a steady supply of fresh greens.
