How To Grow

Sow Spring to mid-Summer in cool and cold districts, 2.5cm (1”) deep where they are to grow. Space 15cm (6”) apart in rows 1m (3’) apart. Water well particularly in dry spells. Train young seedlings up trellis, netting, bean frames or form a wooden tripod. Runner Beans develop an extensive root system so will be at their best in well dug and manured soil. Seedlings emerge 7-10 days.

When To Plant

South Island: Jan, Feb, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec

North Island: Jan, Feb, Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec

Important Note

Additional fertiliser is not required as legumes will produce their own nitrogen.

Unlike other beans, runner beans do not self pollinate & will need help from beneficial insects.

During high evening temperatures, flowers may not set & will fall off. Spraying flowers with a fine mister spray will assist with pod set.
